UNDERSTANDING ULTRAFILTRATION
A fine barrier.
A clearer way forward.
Ultrafiltration, or UF, passes water through a fine membrane that retains suspended particles and colloidal material. It is a useful stage in water treatment where clarity and particulate control are important.
Choosing a UF system starts with the source water and the quality you need at the outlet. It can be combined with screening, other pretreatment, reverse osmosis and disinfection as the application requires.
Swiss Aqua helps turn those requirements into a practical treatment solution, from selection and installation through to service support.

FEATURES & BENEFITS
Built around your water requirements
A coordinated approach to filtration, operation and long-term care.
Physical membrane barrier
Fine membrane filtration separates suspended material from water. Performance is matched to the selected membrane and feed conditions.
Lower turbidity
Reduce particles and colloids to improve clarity and create a more consistent supply to subsequent treatment.
Modular configuration
Select the number and arrangement of modules around production demand, operating hours and the available installation space.
Integration with RO
UF can be used upstream of reverse osmosis when the source water requires additional control of suspended solids.
Planned cleaning cycles
Backwashing and appropriate chemical cleaning help maintain operation. The programme follows membrane supplier guidance.
Monitoring & service
Track operating conditions and filtrate quality, supported by commissioning guidance and a practical maintenance plan.
HOW IT WORKS
Four stages of a UF treatment cycle
Prepare the feed
Assess the incoming water and use appropriate screening or pretreatment before it reaches the membrane modules.
Filter through membranes
Water passes through the membrane while suspended material is retained on its feed side.
Collect the filtrate
Filtered water moves to storage, the intended process or a further treatment stage.
Backwash & maintain
Scheduled backwash and cleaning remove accumulated material and support continuing operation.
UF is not desalination. Dissolved salts generally pass through; the complete treatment train must be selected for the required water quality.
WIDE RANGE OF APPLICATIONS
One technology. Many possibilities.
Every application begins with a water analysis and a clear performance requirement.
Drinking-water treatment
A membrane barrier within a treatment train selected to meet the required drinking-water quality.
Industrial process water
Particle removal for process supplies where consistent feed quality matters.
Food & beverage
Pretreatment for suitable utility and process-water systems, with final quality matched to the intended use.
Hotels & commercial buildings
Treatment of incoming water where suspended solids affect downstream equipment.
Wastewater reuse
Polishing of suitably pretreated effluent within a reuse process designed for its end use.
Agriculture & irrigation
Suspended-solids control for suitable irrigation supplies; dissolved salts need separate assessment.
Power & utilities
Pretreatment before demineralisation, RO or other site-specific treatment stages.
Seawater RO pretreatment
Removal of particulates ahead of desalination. UF itself does not remove seawater salts.
SELECTING YOUR SYSTEM
Start with the right information
Your water source
Provide the source, water analysis and any known seasonal changes. This guides membrane selection and pretreatment planning.
Your production needs
Confirm daily volume, peak flow, operating hours and whether production must continue during cleaning or maintenance.
Your site conditions
Share available space, utilities, drainage and the systems that the UF plant will connect to.
INSTALLATION & ONGOING CARE
Support through the life of your system
Plan & install
Coordinate access, pipe connections, drainage, utilities and service clearances before the equipment is installed.
Commission & verify
Check operation and establish baseline readings. Confirm the supplied equipment and finished-water checks against the agreed requirements.
Monitor & maintain
Review pressure, flow and filtrate quality. Follow the selected membrane's cleaning and integrity-testing procedures and keep operating records.
YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
Ultrafiltration FAQs
What does ultrafiltration remove?
UF targets suspended particles and colloids. Microorganism reduction depends on the membrane, its integrity and the validated system design.
Does UF reduce TDS or soften water?
UF generally allows dissolved salts to pass through. Select reverse osmosis or other treatment where dissolved-salt reduction is needed, and assess softening separately for hardness control.
Can UF alone make any water safe to drink?
No single system should be selected without testing the source water and defining the required finished-water quality. Additional treatment and disinfection may be necessary.
How is UF different from RO?
UF is primarily a particle barrier. RO is used when dissolved salts and certain smaller dissolved contaminants also need to be reduced. The two processes can work together.
How often does the system need cleaning?
Cleaning frequency depends on the feed water, operating rate and membrane. Operating trends and supplier instructions guide backwash and chemical-cleaning schedules.
Which capacity should I choose?
Share the required daily volume, peak flow, water analysis, operating hours and intended application. These inputs help determine an appropriate configuration.
